Read Us Any Rule, We'll Break It
Governo's Law of Online Social Stimulus (GLOSS)

"The amount of response to something you post online is inversely proportional to the amount of time and thought you put into posting it."

Sample Sentence:

That squee thread was a classic example of GLOSS if I've ever seen one.

This is the reason why your thoroughly researched, exquisitely well-articulated treatise on the nature of existence, posted only after countless hours of careful consideration and planning, barely attracts any notice; while your hastily scribbled, grammatically catastrophic rant on the nature of mayonnaise, posted out of the blue at three in the morning after an ill-fated Miracle Whip purchase, elicits dozens of comments almost instantaneously.

So how much time did you spend writing this post?

guesstimate? closer to 'countless hours' than 'carelessly scribbled.'

:P

I was wondering how long it would take someone to ask the meta question...

The amount of response this post gets should answer that. ;)

In my experience, GLOSS has applications beyond the online arena. :)

I think every blogger reaches a point where they wonder why it is they're writing. What am I trying to say? Is there anyone listening? What do people think? Am I writing this on a masturbatory impuluse? Does anyone really care?

Which is a lot of words to say that I sometimes feel like I'm shouting into the wind. ;)

Unfortunately, this is often true, but the online area seems to remain the place where it's most applicable...

I also agree with (and relate to) everything you wrote about blogging, and I would argue that GLOSS is the reason bloggers reach that point in the first place.

If you feel like you're shouting into the wind, just post a quiz or something...that should turn things right around. ;)
